As opposed to the regular, fact focused blogs we usually post, I'm going to describe now what my hair care routine looks like.
For context, I'm 26 years old, and have hair that comes down to my shoulders. At around 25 I started noticing that I was losing hair (the Norwood Reaper had come for me). This was unsurprising, as it runs in my family, with my father being bald, and both my brothers having started balding before me.
The level of hair loss that I had at my peak, when I was doing nothing about it, was significantly more than now, and I can attribute that much in part to my routine, which you'll find below.
TL;DR:
Key Takeaways: My Daily Anti-Hair Loss Routine
-
The Medical Foundation: 1 mg Finasteride (daily) to block DHT and 5% Minoxidil spray (AM/PM) to stimulate regrowth.
-
Washing Strategy: Alpecin C1 Caffeine Shampoo used every 2 days. Tip: Leave it on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.
-
Absorption Boost: Microneedling with a 0.5mm Derma Roller every few days (at night) to activate dormant follicles.
-
Strength Support: Daily oral Biotin supplements (Burgerstein or Priorin) to reinforce hair structure and prevent breakage.
My Core Medical Routine (Finasteride & Minoxidil):
The two most important products, which you've probably heard about a million times, are Finasteride and Minoxidil. Finasteride acts as a DHT blocker, stopping additional hair from falling out. Meanwhile, Minoxidil stimulates blood flow and regrowth/reactivation of old hair follicles.
These products are the most talked about for a reason - they are the most effective ones, and have been proven to work time and time again, both anecdotally and scientifically.
I take a 1 mg pill of Finasteride in the morning, and use a local application Minoxidil spray with 5% concentration, twice a day in the spots most affected by the hair loss (in the morning and evenings before I go to bed). The brand isn't that important, as it just needs to have the active ingredient.
Finasteride is a prescription only medicine as of the time of writing, but locally applied Minoxidil doesn't require one. Please note that both of these (particularly Finasteride) have side effects, so please consult your Dermatologist before starting either!
Supplementary Care (Shampoo, Vitamins and such):
This is where the products on this website come into play. All the products on the site have been tested and are used by me, my friends, or my brothers. That is to say, that I trust their efficacy. While I would love to be able to sell Finasteride and Minoxidil on this website, they are both medical products, and can only be sold by pharmacies.
My shampoo of choice is Alpecin C1 Caffeine, which you can find on the website here.
I use it once every two days, as I noticed that shampooing my hair daily seems to be doing more harm than good. It's a product that works in a similar fashion to Minoxidil, in that it stimulates blood flow to encourage hair growth. When using it, you should be sure to not only wash your hair with it, but also rub it into your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes, as that's where the magic happens. You'll notice a cooling sensation in your hair if done correctly, which is the menthol in the shampoo at work.
Along with the shampoo, I use a derma roller once every few days. I personally use a Scandinavian Biolabs 0.5 mm derma roller. (We're working on getting some good rollers for this website too!). There are various sizes of derma rollers you can get, but I found that 0.5 mm works for my use case. I would recommend doing some research into what suits you best. This is definitely the worst part of the whole routine, as it hurts a little bit, as it IS a bunch of metal microneedles penetrating your scalp. However, it makes it much easier for dormant follicles activated by any of the other products above, to then come out. I normally do it at night, an hour or so before bed. This is just because it makes your scalp noticeably red, and I can't exactly go into work with a red head.
Finally, some biotin product. I personally like Burgerstein Hair & Nails, but I have many friends that prefer Priorin, so we sell both. This is an oral supplement that you just take once in the morning. Biotin helps make your existing hairs stronger, and less prone to breakage or being torn out. Combining it with products like Minoxidil and Finasteride ensure that the benefits are better, and last longer.
